En arrivant à Gordes, on se laisse surprendre par la grandeur imposante du château et de l'église qui dominent le village, pour mieux protéger comme par le passé, ses habitants et exercer leurs influences respectives.
Le château reconstruit en 1525, existait déjà en 1031. Bien conservé et restauré avec soin, il lie l'architecture de la période troublée du Moyen Age au nouvel art de vivre de la Renaissance. L'imposant édifice est puissamment défendu par de grosses tours rondes dont la couronne de mâchicoulis supporte une terrasse pour l'artillerie, les hauts murs ont percés de trois étages de fenêtres « renaissance », on remarque aussi sur les murs, les tours et les échauguettes, les ouvertures des bouches à feu judicieusement réparties. La façade sud du château s'ouvre au soleil face au vieux Gordes ; derrière la fontaine, une porte voûtée percée dans la muraille accède par une cour intérieure à l'escalier monumental qui dessert le bâtiment.

À la Révolution, Lacoux était une commune du canton d'Aranc puis en 1800, elle dépend du canton d'Hauteville. Sa population, stable jusqu'en 1920, commence alors à
décroître et n'est plus que de 100 habitants en 1964, date de son rattachement à la commune.
